The making of port orion -)

Port Orion consists of levels 11 through 19. It is the last human sub-port leading into the depths. What lies beyond that is a bit more mysterious. Port Orion now only has 1 safe level controlled by the remnant. They are lead by Dr. Sierra. They are barely holding level 10. Your missions will be to head into port orion and help the remnant. The people that lost their lives and were captured stand in your way…. with something else that seems to be showing up more as you head deeper….

The dead do not sleep here and some are found in their waking systems….

THANKS to that article I found another problem… WOW… Payload != payload… nice =/…

Update: Well THERE IS YOUR PROBLEM! I updated itunes and it seems the OLD fashion way of dragging a zip file on it does not work anymore!… It just copies the sound files… I have to now make an ipa and send it out instead!… I hope other developers are reading this that cost me a LOT of time and a very late night… Not to mention Doom also!.. So I am going to test uploading and downloading then one more play run then it will be out again in an email… thanks again for the patience… ridiculously hard to find the clues sometimes…

Update: build WILL be out today =).. I am just going through a long process to make sure everyone can install it and nothing changed… other good news I FOUND THE LAG PRODUCER in the beginning of a level and fixed it =)… it seems the accelerometer can get a traffic jam of commands backed up while you are loading. I just turned it off as I am not using it =).. GOOD STUFF!

So after I get it it tested as an AD-Hoc install I will let everyone know!… THANKS for the patience.. there are about 100 steps to get a app out to testers. If you miss one or they change one then whammo =)….

have moved to my favorite motivational band while coding.. Bleach still continues to be my motivation on the art side… LOVE that show.. =)…man a mix of the two could be some amazing entertainment =)

At level 9 level 3 Reyem taking CHUNKS out of me -)…not going to be easy to earn =P..if you see him in the Arena you know someone Earned him =)

UPDATE:Pretty sure it will be tonight.. I need testing and what better then Beta testers to beat on it… REMEMBER to use the L1 – L9 in the warp machine to test everything… the best method would be to start at level 2 since 1 has been beat to death…
Method single player testing…
1. load up
2. create a new player
3. Stop by the malice machine in town (warp gate) set your name
4. Goto the warp machine and type L2. This will set you up with everything you could have at level 2 in common condition. The command will also set up up to quest 4 which is the first on level 2. Then equip your new armor in your inventory…
5. Beat those 4 quests on level 2.
6. Head back to the warp machine and type L3. repeat for each level. =). you get to play with everything in the first 10 levels.

Reyem neas you will have to earn I do not recommend trying until around level 6 or so.

I will email when the build is up. Do not expect it until late tonight central time =).. I cannot wait until y’all are duel wielding a tachyon and plasma rifle with 12 processing buffs…. feels pretty damn good!.. Then you step into the arena with another player weilding those / throwing nades at your head / call up Reyem Neas out of the floor to pound you!… O man this is going to be an amazing game when it is done =)….

QUESTION: Anyone NOT 4.1 right now? They are requiring 4.0 compatibility tests… so it would save me a TON of time to just target 4.0…

Update: In the upcoming test you can type L# at the warp machine. The # is the level and this will:
1. Level you up to this level. (Up to 9)
2. Set your quest to the first for this new level
3. Clear your items and give you one of _everything_ that _could_ drop to this level (COMMON CONDITION) (EXCEPT REYEM NEAS) you will have to earn his butt.. and good luck he hurts something fierce now…

Bed time! =)…. I had a few more things pop up with the 4.0 upgrade… o well they should be easy BUT you all may see more “crashes” which are really just the new “things” apple laid out for me =)… just let me know if you see one.. =).. I am hoping wens – thurs to get it out… It is looking good now..

Also now that you can mail items I had to remove the multiple ITEM saves…now the saves will mainly be used for different builds of STATS with the same gear. There is jut no way to avoid duping if I allow you to mail an item. Then load an older version and mail it again.. =P.. this works pretty good anyway =). It will need testing.. =)

20 pages of code and a database later.. you can now mail stuff to each other =).. AND I can mail stuff to you for special occasions and the like =)

Tonight I hope to clear some of the bugs.. I do have a childs baseball game though.. so it maybe Tuesday before a build will be ready =)…work is KILLING me today… argh.. so much to do so little time =)….

Well now that I am running full mac I have a few issues to clear up today..my export tools need to be rebuilt as one example. I am also going to get the mailbox system in to test… ;).. you will be able to mail items and messages to anyone that has a name. You have to set you name at the arena portal. Once you take a name it is yours until you release it. =) Back to work!

Update: All done with the update weee!!!1 ;).. now back to the bug list .. only a few left. I might get them done tonight BUT I am going to the race track also tonight..

\Update: Stuck in update hell.. I will be here a day or so.. argh!

argh I have to do it sometime so now is as good a time as any…. So if it goes well (not expected to) then the build will ship in a few days… if not who knows…. now it will be 0S4.0 compliant as it has to be anyway for the app store… owach…

Testing! Almost done just the issues below! =)

Update 2: The stats for “today” will reflect what you did in a 30 minute snap shot of TOTAL play time.. every 30 min a new snapshot is uploaded to the website.. this should help to keep the scoreboard less stagnate.. I probably will filter to where if you have not uploaded in a few days it will drop your scores from the TODAY’s board but the all time will never drop. =)

Update: I plan on having a intro level to train you on startup. (DOOM’s idea). I want it to start with a white fade in and you getting up with a stumble.. your standing in some wreckage on a vast white out plane with some ice mountains in the distance.. you loot your sword there and a .22 with 6 shots in it. you have dead people all around. There is a headless arm less bot wandering around looking for flesh that you must shoot. In the level you must. 1. loot a corpse 2. use a weapon to kill the bot that cannot harm you… 3. equip a skill 4. equip a weapon. 5. use a skill.. 6. melt an item… I think that covers most of the very basics… I will create this as the last thing in the game so I cam have all the bells and whistles when a user first plays the game =) .

Next build you will loose your character BUT I will be shipping it with a way to level and test items that you receive up to that level =).. also you will be able to set the quest you are on… thus much faster testing. so setting your level to 3 will set you on the first level 3 quest with level 3 mid ranged gear and all the skills you could have possible looted up until then….it will probably be that way up until launch. I do hope you try all the levels and quests though and do not just skip to the end =)…this will make arena interesting for sure =P

– Connections done. I will need you guys to beat on the arena connections and see how it works for you… with all the different networks it is really hard to pick the right methods. However this should work 90% of the time for internet.. and 100% for local. LAN = local WAN = internet… so testers with multiple devices that want to check localy will choose wan and be on the same wifi connection.. those that want to test WAN need to connect to each other not on the same WIFI OR!!! you can change your device to be on the 3G network and connect to one on the WIFI network or BOTH 3g to test the wan connection… I will have a build by the weekend for yall =).. Arena is very important to me as there is NO game that has anywhere NEAR the depth for online play.. and also not to mention the single player =)… ok tonight I am done goals complete… hopefully my new Mac book pro will be in tomorrow and that will eat a little of my time to set up.. not to mention pay off! =).. night guys thanks for all the help!! There will be ingame stuff dedicated to all you hard testers -=)…

Update000: Awesome with that last hard issue testing out well there are only a few small issues I need to get finished. I have some quicks and the left handed stuff not showing in arena… along with all the issues you all have found (really not even a 5th of what I expected =) )

Update: Good news lan multiplayer is going great! There are only a few issues I need to fix. Doom is going to remote test the lan multiplayer stuff =)… I am going back to attempting hole punching and not using unpn routing. I found my router here does not support it and that does not help the odds that others will have the same issue. So I will not be using codemonkeys tcmportmapper for now. I now am back on the hard part and last real hard issue left. Punching a hole in the firewalls out there!

Also, I was asked in the comments if people could post videos /pics/info… YES PLEASE DO! I am a one man show and really have no method to get the word out on this HUGE project =)

Update: The codingmonkeys delivered!.. Information there.. now to implement it and get this arena rolling! =) Thanks to Dom…O and it is going GREAT! =).. I want to get a working arena up for testing then up the options like challenge a player by name.. pick the arena to fight in… maybe even side rules. So the next release that has arena in it will be a minimal test of combat in the arena =)

Update: I have the Arena back up and running. With the build I have not released. So do not try to connect with the release build ;).. It is running and you can connect if you attempt to connect from the same IP (IE you connect locally after being matched by my dedicated server). I am waiting on the makers of TCMPortmapper (codingmonkeys.de) to get back with me. I am looking for an easy solution to use unpn port mapping for routers. They have what could be the perfect solution. However, they have removed all instructions of the use of their little tool. I mailed them so we will see if they get back with me. If not that could add quite a bit of work for me to get all the methods figured out. I will keep looking however.

This was a shotgun send off (I did not spend the 45 minutes it takes to get it adhoc built to my devices just strait installs ) to get it out tonight as my life has gotten ridiculously busy with one son in baseball and one in football. So time was pressed to get it out tonight. Let me know if there is a problem and I will pump another out right when I get the message.

Instructions:
When you have more then one type of skill drop them in the create window and combine them to make them stronger (Each chip is 0.5+ the highest level in there). After each quest look in your skills and inventory to see what you have. You get a lot of skills early to spice up combat. Start at the avatar and get-er-done…. Also do not forget to use the pistol whip skill it is a great beginning skill to take on the bots. The beginning strategy is to step in strike and step back. Once you get the block skill and a shield after quest one .. walk in strike strike wait for attack block strike … you can block and strike at the same time as both hands are independent =)… Rock on peops -=)

Update: Final round of testing tonight and if I do not find anything major I will ship out the beta tomorrow =).. Things look good. Now it is time (during beta) to knock all the bugs out and get the final feature requests in =)..Heck if things go well enough since it is a beta I may punch it out tonight to you guys.. I expect bugs so why not =)..I just need to fix 2 things first..

Update: All levels done and tested all quest tested up to level 10 .. I am going to finish the leveling speed tomorrow and should be able to send out a beta to you all to find the bugs… and balance issues.. then I will start on the arena side of things… you will not recognize this game -=P… I may get it out tomorrow if the day job does not kill me… if not it will be within 3 days. I am having some issues at work hopefully they do not get in the way.. I do expect to ship a beta in the next 3 days minus the online side.. we need to find what works and what doesn’t so we can move forward to the rest of the game … I am paring it down to 30 levels… I would rather 30 levels of awesome then 50 levels of grind.. =)…

Update: Wow the stats system in the build you guys have was not right at all =)… I finally completed it and have the leveling system done. I am flying through levels. I still have to get the website stuff done.HOWEVER, I think shipping beta with that out and Arena out is a better idea. Both those are networking issues and would be better to work on in tandem….

Back to work.. things are going well.. I do not think with all the crap that hit me this week that I can have it ready for the weekend and I want this to be the best it can be when it hits your hands… I am sure it will be ready next weekend or before =)…(Unless another flood hits =P)

Last weekend I had about 0 time to work on M.E. but now I am back on task.

I am down to level check offs =).. meaning I play each level by level using the skills and stats you should have on that level and tweaking them to be the right balance.

I am currently on level 3 but I just started so a few days of good work time and beta will be ready FINALLY =)

Update 7: Better to show them like this I guess.. LOTS o weapons in this one.. I would rather have 100 really good looking weapons then spend days making 5 really artisticly nice ones… I am for gameplay here =).. BTW ignore the stats that is what I am tweaking now on all items -=)

Update 6: Here is the PVP pistol tier 1 and PVP axe tier 1 reward.. not sure I ever showed them .. ignore the bug on the tip of the gun I am on it =P

UPDATE: I think in the next 4 days if nothing gets in the way I will have the beta build ready for yall… Thanks for the past 2 weeks patience I have increased the size of this game by 10x… so get ready =-)… I will be looking for where you think the game needs more fun/polish and bugs.. then we move to testing Arena!.. After that it will be another long buckle down and I will get the next episode done =)..

I am on level 5 and testing / fixing / changing enemies in and out… getting there. I will wait on arena until you guys have a build. (It may take a week to get Arena going).. Below is the final list of level 1-10 or Episode one Skills.. (not weapons there are tons of those too).. The top row are the tick buffs… They really spice up the combat.


I would like you guys to choose how to distribute the tick combat skills =)..

FLAMING_GRASP
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to ignite a target..”

ELECTRIC_GRASP
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chanc to electricute a target. ”

INFECTION
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to infect a target that will explode damaging all around it. ”

ICY_GRASP
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to slow a target. ”

RAGE
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to enter rage mode for 3 seconds. This will add 25 percent damage per hit.”

REACH
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to infect an enemy with an attack that will lash out at a nearby enemy after 1 second. ”

CHAIN:
“This ability when dropped in your action bars gives every attack a X percent chance to enter chain mode for 3 seconds. Your attack speed is doubled during this time. ”

VENGEANCE:
“As you take damage this ability will build. Then when it peaks you can use it and your next attack will garner X percent more damage. However if you do not take damage the skill fades over time.”,

Update…Not to toot my own horn but damn is this game shaping up =).. with so many tick skills combat can really get interesting =)..

Wow in counting skills I noticed I have more then 29 base SKILLS alone from levels 1-10 I think that was more then my Wow char had until around 50…

Update: Finally down to testing the leveling and stat systems in combat in all levels =)..Then I think I am going to go ahead and get the arena going before I give you guys the beta.. =)..What I really want out of beta is suggestions on how to make the game better then any other of its type \=)..

Good stuff.. If you have not checked out Epics Tech Demo I recommend it. A great street fighter esque game with amazing art. It definitely inspires my competitive natures =). On Mission Europa. I am adding a bunch of skills and enemies. I am spicing the levels up to where I think they need to be. I have tested aLL the quests. (35 in episode 1 alone….)… I have been toying with cutting the game back to 30 levels of more concentrated fun..I have not made that decision yet. I am also toying with finishing the arena BEFORE I go beta with Episode 1. I think I would get more testing that way as people play. So now back to work!…

I am adding a bunch of chance skills into episode 1 as far as “buffs” or chance skills. These have a small chance to tick when you get hit or hit an enemy.
1. Rage – On you getting hit boost damage output.
2. Chain – Change on you hitting of going into a rapid attack mode swinging/shooting 2-3x as fast.
3. Reach – Chance on hit the character you hit will hurt an enemy around them.
4. Infection – Chance on hit the enemy will build and explode damaging enemies around you.
5. Icy Hands – Chance you will slow an enemy on hit.
6. Electric Grasp – Chance you will tick lightning damage on a hit.
7. Flaming Grasp – Chance an enemy will ignite on hit.

Those are just the Chance of hit and most will be given as quest rewards to get you going. -=)..
